Season 1 Episode 12 – Keeping Left

Welcome to episode 12 of the Outback Safer Driving series.

When you are driving on any road in New South Wales, you are generally required to keep the left side of the road clear of any oncoming traffic.

However, when traveling on a two-way road without dividing lines, including dirt roads, you can travel in the middle of the road if you need to because of the condition or width of the road.

This is only allowed if you can do it safely, including having plenty of forward visibility. This can also help you manage dangers like damage to the road surface or wildlife coming in from either side of the road.

Two times when you must absolutely keep to the left side of the road are when approaching corners, and approaching crests because you simply cannot see if there’s any oncoming traffic. And that may be absolutely treacherous. So to stay safe, remember to stay as far left as you safely can when you have no or limited visibility, especially when you’re approaching crests and on bends. You can be in the middle of the road and be nice and safe when you’ve got plenty of vision down the road.

Thanks for listening, remember to check the website for the latest road conditions when you have mobile coverage.

Stay safe. See you on the road.
