Milparinka is a historic town near Evelyn Creek, established in the 1880s and once a thriving settlement. Though it fell into disrepair by the late 20th century, a dedicated community effort revitalised the town, restoring heritage buildings and developing the award-winning Milparinka Heritage Precinct. The precinct spans over 20 attractions, offering insights into Aboriginal heritage, early exploration, mining, and local history, all within an environmentally sustainable framework.
At the heart of the precinct is the Milparinka Visitor Information Centre, housed in the former courthouse. Volunteers guide visitors through various rooms, including the Malyangapa Cultural Heritage Room, showcasing local Aboriginal art, and the Pioneer Women’s Room, which tells the stories of women who endured the challenges of life in the outback. The Sturt Room, ANZAC Room, and Kidman Heritage Centre highlight key historical figures and events, with artefacts, displays, and interactive elements providing a comprehensive look at the region’s past.
Milparinka also offers outdoor experiences, including the Dark Sky Park for stargazing and walking trails that lead through historic ruins. The town’s gardens, waterhole, and sculpture installations create a scenic environment for visitors to explore. The walking trail reveals the remains of old schools, shops, and hotels, offering a glimpse into the early life of this once-thriving community. Through its rich blend of history, culture, and nature, Milparinka provides an engaging and reflective visitor experience.
