Outback Safer Driving Series Episode 2

Season 1 Episode 2 – Before you Leave

Season 1 Episode 2 – Before You Leave

We’re here in the Broken Hill Tourist Park, about to head off into Corner Country. Because we’re going to be traveling through some more remote areas. We need to make sure that both the trailer and the car are fully prepped and ready to go.

It’s important to check that everything is ready for the trip.  This includes:

  • checking that all the levels are correct before we head off,
  • making sure that the electrical connections are all nice and tight,
  • that all the rubber sections of the radiators right.
  • The fluid levels are correct.

Also, make sure you have a look underneath the car:

  • Check the suspension for any loose nuts or bolts.
  • Check for any leaks that may be happening underneath there and that’ll show themselves as possibly wet spots or shiny spots where the bolts have been moving.

The other thing I’m going to make sure of before I leave, is that my recovery gear, my tools, my first aid kit, my spare parts are all present and in good repair.

When it comes to spare parts, I’ll always talk to my mechanic before I leave, or I’ll talk to one of the Outback trip preparation specialists to make sure that we’ve got the right gear for my car for a remote area trip.

And of course, the big thing to remember if you’re towing is that it’s very important to check the mass of your trailer and to ensure that you’re well within the capacity of your tow vehicle before you head off.

You need to make sure to do a complete check of the trailer as well, underneath, around, making sure everything’s nice and secure before heading off. Then there’s only one thing left to do.

Stay safe. See you on the road.
