Welcome to episode 11 of the Outback Safer Driving series.
Outback travel means that you’re probably going to be traveling on dirt road. If you’re doing that for an extended period of time, for more than an hour or so, then firstly, you need to make sure that your vehicle is in four-wheel drive if it is capable of four wheel drive.
And secondly, assuming you have brought an air compressor, it’s a great idea to drop your tyre pressure as well. We drop them down to around about 75 per cent of what our recommended pressures are for sealed road.
Measuring them, my tyres are currently 36 psi. so I’m going to drop them down to about 26 psi front and back, and that will give me a much safer ride on the dirt road.
The key point to remember here, of course, is that when you get back onto the tar, don’t forget to reinflate your tyres. And remember to let someone know your travel plans before you leave, and check in when you get back to town, just in case.
Stay safe. See you on the road.
